You still lose life. Soul Edge was very overpowered but I think its current incarnation (it HAS been nerfed) is reasonably fair.

Moreove, I managed once, with a teammate nevertheless, to kill a Thor with "end items" and Soul Edge (and he was not newbie). Sould Edge is not really overpower, and it's really an end item : try to get it too soon and the other team will just gang you so much that they will have better items before you do. So, no.

Soul Edge is currently the most expensive item in the game.

Also, while it is true that it cannot kill you, it can and will keep you at 2 hit points if you let yourself get that low. Yeah, you'll have shields so you won't die the next time you get hit, but there are enough shield-piercing effects that it's risky.
